Interim Goal – You In?

May 8, 2013

So, friends and supporters (and friendly supporters, and supportive friends), we have an interim financial support goal we would like to meet, and we would like to invite more folks onto our ministry team.  Remember, we can’t do our work without a complete team of folks working alongside us.  We are but a small part of the collective ministry that WE (that means you all too) are doing in Africa: some to go, some to send.

We are looking for 26 people to commit to supporting our ministry at $50 per month.  This will bring our support level up to 50%.  Our goal is to reach this level by June 1.  Pray, think, discuss, hit us up with any questions.  Go to maf.org/lind to sign up.  You in?

Back in the Frozen North

May 7, 2013

After a very early morning (airport at 4:30) we made it in to Fairbanks today.  We will be spending the next 9 days here, then heading down to Anchorage for a long weekend.  We are really excited to be in our old stomping grounds, and Old Man Winter has hung around late this year – seems like just for us.  During the week ahead we will be getting together with friends pretty much every evening, going to St. Paul Church on Saturday, then University Park Bible Church on Sunday.

Today we will have 17 hours and 48 minutes of daylight, and by the time we leave Fairbanks we will gain about another hour.  It was 32 F on landing, but the dry cold really is a lot more bearable, and I was comfy in long sleeves with no coat.  I am sure our systems are pretty confused already with all the time and culture changes, and going from hot/humid tropics to dry/cold arctic desert is one more step towards total insanity.  Loving it though!

If you are reading this from AK, and we haven’t lined up a time to get together, we would love to hear from you at mlind@maf.org and we will set up a time to chat!

-Matthew

Heading North

May 6, 2013

This last week, during which I was apparently not blogging, was busy.  I look back at our brand new day planner, which we’ve been faithfully filling out for two weeks, and actually are in denial that it was all this week.  I have been sick with a killer sinus cold (though I’m feeling much better now) and thankfully the kids only got a very mild version and are also on the mend.

Tuesday morning, I shared with the ladies during Bible study at Faith Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, WA.  They asked such good questions that we talked for the entire two hours!  Wednesday evening, we presented a mission report and shared about our future with MAF during prayer meeting at the same church.  Thursday we had a great time with friends that I hadn’t seen in ten years who recently started supporting our ministry.

This past weekend was a highlight of our timing back in the states: it was my ten year high school reunion!  Friday evening and all day Saturday was spent seeing old friends and catching up.  Since I had been senior class president, I organized pieces of the weekend, but I had lots of help from several classmates, and I am super grateful for the amazing job they did.  We had about 30 people, with their families, show up – not bad for a graduating class of 88 from a private, Christian high school!  I look forward to doing it again in ten years!

Yesterday we shared with Hilltop Bible Church in Tacoma and loved the warm welcome and passion they have for local and international missions.

We also had other little get togethers, small meetings, and family time during the week, as well as more time organizing and sorting and enjoying the sun, which is finally warm here in the Pacific Northwest.

Today we are busy packing to head North to our home of five years in Fairbanks, Alaska.  It is still cold and snowy there, which is unseasonable considering the time of year.  The area is gaining an hour of daylight each week, preparing for constant daylight from mid-May through August.  We will be chilly, but we are so looking forward to seeing so many friends after two years being away.  They haven’t even met Amelia yet!

We’ll be posting from Alaska, hopefully often, and we’re way overdue for a picture post…as evidenced by a month’s worth of pictures still stuck on the camera.

Please pray for safe travels, peaceful flights with the kiddos, and a sudden warm streak in the Frozen North, for our sakes!

Summer Plans, Part 1

May 1, 2013

Our plan for summer is to share with as many people as possible about our ministry, not only because it’s so fun to share, but because we are going back, and need further prayer and financial support, so we must find the partners God has set up for us!  Ministry partnership can be really stressful and busy and it’s easy to forget the “why’s” but we are really looking forward to traveling full time and meeting friends, both new and old alike.

For May, we are in the Seattle/Tacoma area for the rest of this week then we head North!  On May 7th, we fly up to Alaska, to Fairbanks, where we lived for five years before moving to Africa.  We will get to meet with our friends and supporters there.  After ten days, we’ll drive down to Anchorage to meet friends from Fairbanks who moved and share with their church about our ministry before flying back to Seattle.  We’ll be in the Pacific Northwest for sure through June 2, but then it gets a little fuzzy.  We don’t have a definite departure date yet.

In June and July, we are in a new city each weekend, with occasional stops during the week.  Here is a rough schedule as it stands today:

June 10-12: Denver, CO

June 14-16: St. Louis, MO

June 17-19: Milwaukee, WI

June 21-23: Indianapolis, IN

June 29-30: Philadelphia, PA

July 5-7: Bow, NH

July 12-14: Richmond, VA/Washington DC

July 17-18: Orlando, FL

July 19-24: Atlanta, GA

Like I said, this schedule is rough dates, but that’s usually how a road trip takes shape.  If you’re in one of these areas, please email us and we’d love to see you!  In each one of these destinations there is an adopting family get-together being planned, so if you’re a family adopting who might be interested in going, please let us know and we’ll match you up!

Places we’re still planning on going, just no dates yet and in no particular order:  Alabama, Arizona, SW Colorado, Lousiville, KY, Nashville, TN, Cincinnati, OH, Oklahoma, Salem, OR, Dallas and Houston, TX.

We must be back in Nampa, just outside Boise, the second week of October.  We begin training and baby will be only a month from arrival, so it’ll be time to get settled for those exciting adventures.  Plus, I imagine we’ll be ready to sleep in one place for a while.

Do you live somewhere else and are just itching to get us to you?  Let us know!  We’ll see you this summer!

12 Weeks!

April 30, 2013

Today we celebrate twelve weeks pregnant!  I am feeling good.  I have always been sickness-free, though to say it usually draws angry glares from many moms who suffered much during their first trimester.

The bump in the picture really only looks like I ate too much, which is exactly how one always pictures in their dreams they would look at their high school reunion (or not).  But, regardless, I am excited to go to my ten-year reunion this weekend…bloated belly and all!

The Rest of Last Week

April 29, 2013

You see, I (Lisa) had planned on a pleasant Sunday evening post outlining our great week and sharing with so many people about our ministry.  But, of course, Sunday did not go as planned and, as Matthew told you, we were a bit distracted yesterday.

But, regardless, we still had a good week and it’s still worth sharing!  Those thieves can’t take us down for more than a day!

Tuesday night I joined my mom for her every-other-month mom’s meeting.  Yes, the same moms she has been meeting since I was born – they all have kids that age.  It was fun to see them again and talk a bit about life in DR Congo.

Wednesday was spent getting more organized, catching up on paperwork and household duties.  We got some stuff out of storage – Matthew has made a trip to our storage unit nearly daily!  We also prepared some materials for sharing.  That afternoon we had the opportunity to head to Matthew’s favorite town on Earth: Port Townsend.  There we met with an adopting couple, the wife of which was about to head over to Kinshasa on Saturday.  It was fun to hang out with them for a while that afternoon.

On Thursday I got the opportunity to go to a mother’s group at our church in Tacoma.  It was far better than joining via email like I’ve been doing for the past few months.  Thursday evening was Matthew’s man night with a few old buddies.

Friday, again, was spent preparing for a busy weekend.  Matthew was also able to help my mom with a few special chores.

Saturday morning Matthew shared an update about our first year in Congo with the men during breakfast at Family of Grace Lutheran church.  For the rest of the morning, he and Levi helped some friends prepare a house that they just purchased.  That afternoon was our first adopting family get-togethers.  This event was something we’ve been looking forward to because six families all gathered together, to swap stories and struggles about their adopting processes, but also, we were able to share our experience and talk about culture and travel face-to-face.  It is so special to meet with other people who have a love for that country and the Congolese specifically!  We were privileged to meet with them and we look forward to similar meetings around the country!

Sunday morning, we went to an early church service at our home church in Tacoma, Faith Presbyterian Church, with plans to speak at the 11am service at Hilltop Bible. However, after the theft, we felt a little naked without our supplies, and out of the frame of mind to share, so we post-poned for next week and headed home.  Levi was pretty upset about the experience as well, even asking “why are we talking to those policemen for so long?”  After an afternoon of rest, we were happy to worship at the evening service at Faith Pres and relax a little with fellowship following the service.  Levi and Amelia made some fast friends to play with as well.

This week is just as full, and filling by the hour.  That said, we still have time to see anyone who would like to get together!  Later this week, I’ll post a rough schedule of the first half of our summer.

You can be praying for us: that we keep the momentum and continue working hard, I am getting the start of a cold, which does not work for my schedule, and that the kids will get enough sleep despite our busy schedule so that they can stay healthy and joyful.  We appreciate your prayers on our behalf!

Seriously Tacoma?

April 28, 2013

We would really appreciate y’alls prayers, we are dealing with frustrations and setbacks right now…  This morning we went to service at Faith Pres Tacoma and had our truck broken into during service – praise the Lord we had our computer with us in the church, but they stole the bag containing all of our missions materials as well as most of our AV stuff (projector, speakers, cables, etc…).  The thing we are most burned about is the custom carved Africa we brought back from the Congo, everything else is replaceable.

This is the second time “our” truck has been broken into in Tacoma – the first was on a trip in 2009 when we lost a camera, hand made diaper bag and a bunch of Lisa’s dad’s work stuff.  The truck now has matching punch marks on the driver and passenger sides where they jammed the locks on each occasion.  Stinkers.

Seriously Tacoma?  We go around the world, to one of the “worst” countries on the planet for theft, without having ANYTHING stolen.  Seriously Tacoma?

We were actually headed from Faith Pres to Hilltop Bible, where we would share with their congregation about our ministry, when everything was taken… had to put that engagement off for next week.

Please pray that we might be able to recover some of our materials, or they might find their way into the right hands.  Please also pray that Mr. Stinker finds Christ through what he took.  Also pray that we will maintain perspective through all this, remember the sovereignty of God, and keep on keeping on!
