Days 48 & 49

July 22, 2013

You know that thing when you work really hard for a period of time then take a scheduled and much-needed vacation, only to get sick.  Welcome to our world.  Last post, I emphasized that our time here in GA was not only to be productive, but also to have some R&R…and so, of course, we get sick.

For me, I have just wasted away into complete exhaustion.  Saturday I took a three hour nap and was otherwise completely worn out.  Yesterday I slept for four hours after church!  Thanks to happy grandparents, the kids woke today, but we didn’t, and I slept until 10:30…for real.  I feel a lot better, though still a little worn down.  Traveling+two small kids+ pregnancy…I have no idea who to blame, but I am happy to have the ability and time to get the rest I need!

For Amelia, this morning, she woke normally, but a half hour later came back downstairs (where we were sleeping in) and climbed into bed with us (on top of Daddy, really) and fell promptly back asleep for an hour.  Once we were up, Amelia came over and we realized she felt slightly feverish – Tylenol and crawling up on Daddy yet again and she is now back out.  Poor girl!

So far, Levi and Matthew seem fine, so hopefully it’s just a brief time for recovery as we do have some things planned for the week!

Otherwise, yesterday we had a great time at Brookwood Presbyterian Church, where we presented our ministry during the Sunday School hour and answered more questions during the lunch that followed the service.

Time to enjoy the Georgia heat – we’ve already caught a cicada and breathed in some extra humid air (though the weather is completely reminiscent of the Congo).

Days 45, 46, & 47: Florida to Georgia and Pictures!

July 20, 2013

Pampered Chef – visit the Facebook party for a great giveaways from our PC consultant, or just go shopping through July 30th!

Okay, we ALL (even the KIDS) slept until 9 this morning…so, you know, we were truly tired, if you didn’t get that from my brief post yesterday.

Backing up to Thursday, we spent the morning hanging out and by 10am, Amelia was back asleep for a much-needed nap and Levi and our hosts’ two boys were all in the pool.  Levi would end up staying there until we dragged him out for bed at 8pm!  No joke!  He made a lot of progress, though, and is really getting confident in the water.  By the end of the day, the kid who wouldn’t really do anything but stick his toes in, was jumping from the side of the pool, into the water, without any arm floaties or adults to catch him – and doing a great job swimming!  At one point, he had four young ladies in the hot tub (which was more like bath temp) with him, so he was showing off, but whatever it takes for his confidence, right?

We had a great turnout for the afternoon BBQ/pool party/get-together-to-share-about-MAF thing.  We talked a lot about what we’re doing in DRC and how God is using the Church there, plus some great food and the pool.  It began to rain at the end of the day, but when you’re already wet, it really doesn’t make much of a difference, especially in the warm Florida rain.

We had such a great time with our hosts, a family adopting a brother and sister from DRC, and their two boys.  It was hard to leave, yet again, especially a place so comfortable, but it was time to North for the first time in many weeks.

Friday morning we packed up the truck, got in the pool for one last dip, and were out of the house by 10am.  We did, while in the pool, get to see the tail end (pun intended, since we saw the condensation trail) of a launch from Cape Canaveral of the Atlas V.  The boom from the launch reached us a full five minutes later and it definitely shook the ground.  It was awesome!  You can read about that launch here.

We traveled ALL day.  I think this baby is having a growth spurt, because I was asleep for the first half of the drive (thankfully, I was not the one driving).  After lunch, it was Matthew’s turn to have a nap and I took over driving.  After he woke, he switched out seats and sat between the two kiddos for the first time in our seven weeks on the road.  The kids thought this was great…Daddy was over it pretty quickly.  After ten hours we were SO glad to be at our destination: we began to call the truck the Crazy Box.

Our stop in Atlanta (just outside the city), is our middle point and will be the longest stay yet.  For ten days we’ll be here, with family.  Matthew’s dad and his wife, Catherine, are hosting us, taking us on a few touristy things, letting us SLEEP IN and taking the kids.  We are so excited for a bit of time to get caught up on rest, and be still for a few days.  We still have two months on the road, but this nice break in the middle makes it a lot more manageable.  Plus, next weekend, we will be joined by a VERY special guest, making our trip here even more special!

So, here are a few pictures from the last week…

What Day is This??

July 19, 2013

Okay, I haven’t posted in a few days, but I’m not about to make a coherent post now.  Today was 10 hours of driving…ugh.  So, for now, you’ll just have to keep yourself busy buying stuff from our Pampered Chef show…or maybe you’re ready to jump on board our ministry team and get us back to DRC?

Thanks for your patience…we’ve had a fun couple of days and I will write about it tomorrow!

Days 43 – 44: Florida Sun

July 17, 2013

Don’t forget to head over and go crazy at our Pampered Chef show – it’s open until July 30th, but don’t wait!

After the hotel, we hit the road in the morning and headed south to Florida.  We took a brief lunch break in St. Augustine to see the history of the country’s oldest town.  We had a picnic lunch in a park and walked down to see the castle on the water.    It was very very hot, though, and we were ready to be back in the air conditioned car and finish our drive south.

Our hosts live outside of Orlando, close to Cocoa Beach and and Cape Canaveral.  In the words of their almost-nine-year-old’s son: “Have you stayed at a house with TWO pool slides?  Because I’ve been to houses with just one slide, but not TWO slides…”  Of course, we haven’t stayed at a house with a pool yet, until yesterday.  And it does have two slides.

We took a brief pre-bed dip after we arrived, and slept really well.  This morning we had a great breakfast and headed to the beach.  Our hosts asked what we wanted to do and we realized neither of our kids had ever been to the beach!  So, there is a small beach, about a half mile long, with perfect sand and waves just 15 minutes from their house.  It was great to be there on a weekday morning, too, because there were only a dozen people on the sand.  It was fantastic and the kids played for three hours straight.  Our hosts’ two boys, ages 6 and almost 9, were pros in the waves and Levi quickly learned to hop in them, mostly with the help of a random lady and her elderly mother who decided to hang out with him.  It was so sweet.

The adults enjoyed beach chairs and umbrellas, switching on and off with the kids in the water and sand.  But, lunch time was approaching and it was time to head home and get cleaned up.  Amelia quickly fell asleep in the car and we ate lunch and showered and Amelia finished her nap with Daddy after getting cleaned up.

It was time to head out for dinner where we were meeting my (Lisa’s) dad’s cousin, who has been really supportive and interested in our travels overseas.  It was so great to see him and meet his family.  It was his son’s birthday, so he got to pick the restaurant, so our kids got to experience their first Chuck E Cheese.  They had a great time, but were getting tired and it was time to head back.

Tomorrow is a get together with other families, some of whom are adopting from DRC.  We are so excited to meet more families who already love the Congo like we do and share our experiences from living there and why we are excited to head back.

Days 40 – 42: Levi Turns 4!

July 15, 2013

Saturday was a fun day – we had a get together with a few other adoptive families and chatted about Congo.  It was a relaxing afternoon and the kids had a great time with others their own age.  One extra special fun part was our hosts thoughtfulness at buying a cake…

Some mild excitement, can't you tell?

Levi’s 4th birthday was Sunday and this was a chance at a party – it was so great to have this celebration.  Do any of you remember Levi’s third birthday party?

Sunday morning we woke extra early and began the two hour drive to DC to have a day of fun in Levi’s honor.  First was a stop at church with our very special host for the day: Auntie Jenny!  Jennifer, Matthew’s sister, lives in DC and we were thrilled to be able to spend this day with family!

Once church was over, we headed downtown for some lunch (ironically, at a restaurant that also used to have a franchise in Kinshasa…no joke…Nando’s, anyone?).  It was delicious and Levi was really getting into the birthday spirit…he was four, thus so big like Daddy, right?

Next up we drove over to the National Mall for the main event: dinos, whales, airplanes, and spaceships – all of a boys’ favorite things all in one place!  Our first stop was the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History for some dinos and whales…

Matthew and I took a detour into the African section – it was a surreal experience to see so many things from our home in DRC!  There was a section on the fabric, such a love of mine, the markets, and the food.

This was in Ghana, but it is so similar to DRC - cassava, tomatoes, garlic, and pili pili.

Next stop was a hot walk across the mall to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum.  Because of her brother’s passion for dinos and airplanes, Amelia was also having a great time seeing all the fun stuff.

After we were finished and the kids were tired, it was time to head out of downtown DC and back to Auntie Jenny’s apartment for some dinner, pool time, and presents!

We didn’t leave until 10:30pm and still had a two hour drive home.  Thankfully the kids fell asleep right away…and I did eventually, too, but we were exhausted when we arrived home at 1am (half hour delay due to construction) and collapsed into bed.

The morning came too soon and it was time to move on.  We drove today for seven hours making it to the border between South Carolina and Georgia.  Tomorrow’s destination: Orlando!

Pampered Chef Show!

July 13, 2013

Screen Shot 2013-07-13 at 8.57.01 PM

We interrupt your regular update on our epic road trip to let you all know about an exciting event from now until the end of July…  A Pampered Chef show!  Our friend, and Pampered Chef consultant, has offered to have us host a Pampered Chef show in order to help us raise money to set up house in Congo.

When we go back for our full term, it will be necessary to set up an entire household – appliances, 12v system, kitchen, linens, etc…all of this can add up and yet, it must all be bought ahead of time!  While we intend to be as resourceful as possible, sometimes it just takes cash.

BUT, in this case, YOU can help AND get some great stuff from Pampered Chef!  So, please head over to go to our show and go crazy!  Pampered Chef is high quality, useful, and fun kitchen stuff!  Please do remember to not send your purchases to the host (us), since it would then be sent to MAF HQ, and you wouldn’t actually receive it…

Our Pampered Chef consultant has graciously given us proceeds from the show, plus we are the hosts and will get benefits – the more you buy, the more great stuff we can use to be stewards in the kitchen in Congo!  We loved having people over for dinner and offering hospitality while living in DRC, so having a few Pampered Chef items will help make that possible.

Thank you ahead of time – and we hope you enjoy shopping at Pampered Chef.  Please feel free to share this opportunity with your friends, too!  The more the merrier!  Click the picture above to get started…

Days 38 & 39: Heading South…

July 12, 2013

Yesterday we left NYC and headed south.  Our goal was to make it to Chesapeake Bay for the evening.  We rented a boat for the night and wanted to head over to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for the afternoon.  Matthew’s best buddy worked there for a few years a while back and, if you know Matthew, you know his love for sailing and boats.

We had a great time, though we’re all pretty pooped from two busy days in NYC.  The kids loved climbing all over the boats and seeing the jellyfish in the water (especially since Nemo had just been on in the car).  We grabbed lunch in St. Michael’s, MD.

Once we were ready to go, we drove another hour to “our” boat for the night.  The kids LOVED being on a REAL boat, though we didn’t get to take it out anywhere.  We had a wonderfully relaxing evening, watching the stars from the top of the catamaran, and each kid had their own berth and slept really well.  We had our own little snuggly berth and it was very cozy, especially in the middle of the night when it started to rain, lightening and thunder.  It was awesome.

This morning we got up, checked email during breakfast at IHOP – while surrounding patrons judged our parenting…it’s the classy parents that sit their kids in front of a movie at a restaurant while they hunch over their electronic devices.  Classy.

Now we are in Richmond, Virginia for the weekend.  Our hosts are just about to leave for DRC to get their kiddos (on THURSDAY!) and we are excited to get to coach them through the final packing process.  Tomorrow there is a get together with other adopting families and we will share about our ministry with them.

Sunday is a really exciting day…details to come!

Just want to shout out to all those who have come on board as ministry partners with us in the past few weeks – thank you for your willingness to partner with our ministry!!!  We just updated our Support Status page, so check it out!

Day 37: NYC Continued…

July 10, 2013

Today was another great, and hot, day in the city!  Once again, we caught the bus to the ferry, the ferry to the subway, and the subway up one whole stop.  First, the kids were already hungry.  I’m not sure why, but they were and there was a deli, and I hadn’t had a bagel in New York yet…

After a few minutes of air-conditioned rest and eating, we walked to the 9/11 Memorial that sits on the site of the Twin Towers.  It is two huge pools, well, water falls into pools (that both kids asked about swimming in…), surrounded by the names of all those who lost their lives on that day and in the 1993 WTC bombing.  It is a very pretty site, very calm, and the pools are impressive – they are each the size of the footprint of each tower, and very deep.  I would look up the details for you, but you can probably figure out Google if you’re interested…

After that, we boarded the train again and headed uptown back to Times Square to get to Rockefeller Center.  My personal past time is television…the nerdy way, with history and trivia and whatnot – I’m a geek about it.  Anyway, seeing the NBC Studios has always been big on my to-do list and my husband is ever so loving to let me take the studio tour.  Little kids aren’t allowed, so the three of them headed back to Central Park and I got to take the tour.  It was so awesome to see the set of Nightly News with Brian Williams, the SNL studio and make up department*, and the Today Show set.  Just wandering the halls, escorted by smartly dressed pages, was really fun.

After my geek-fest, I walked down the 10 or so blocks to meet my family at our pre-arranged meeting spot, seeing lots of fun New York things along the way…we grabbed some hot dogs and headed back to the subway station.

We finally have the subway system figured out, so obviously it’s time to leave, right?  We came back to the little apartment, which is working out just fine, by the way – it’s in a great location and we are sleeping well.  We found a Chinese place and Matthew grabbed some dinner.

Now, the apartment is quiet, the kids are asleep and Matthew has ventured back into Manhattan…yep, by himself.  He really wanted to see it at night and one of us is required by law to stay with the children, or something like that.  Plus, I’m just too tired and/or too pregnant to walk anymore.  I’ve walked more miles in the past two days than I have in two years, I think…and to do it in the humidity while pregnant?  Fuggedaboutit…

*On seeing the SNL set: I am completely downplaying my excitement and geek-y-ness at seeing this cultural icon, by the way.  It is in the interest of YOUR interest…but if you’re also an SNL fan, then you can calmly geek out with me!  Eeeeeeeeeee…

Days 35 & 36: ME & NYC

July 9, 2013

Yesterday morning we left our hosts in New Hampshire and drove north to Maine.  We didn’t have anything specific to do in Maine, but we were only a short drive away and by stopping there, when we’re done with this road trip we will have stopped in all four corners of the contiguous 48 states!

By Bow, NH - so old, so awesome!

Bye, Bow, NH – so old, so awesome!

Maine was very pretty and we stopped at a beach for above three minutes – enough to stick our toes in the Atlantic and take a few pictures.

We drove back across the border to Portsmouth, NH.  This town was established in 1623.  It was very touristy, but we did want some New England seafood, so we got a plate of fish, chips, and chowder.  Best. Chowder. Ever.

Then it was time to head to our stop for the next three days…New York City!  We had found a cute little apartment, advertised  as 1100 square feet and a one bedroom – a perfect little getaway.  It had free street parking, a short walk to the Staten Island ferry (which is free) and with the kitchen, we could have breakfasts and dinners there, saving money.  It was a steal of a deal, so we booked.

We got stuck in traffic in the Bronx and Amelia promptly decided to empty her stomach.  That was fun.  Once we passed the traffic, though, we were back in business, driving hurriedly to our home for the next few days – it was late and we were tired.

Unfortunately, the advertisement was…not as we’d hoped.  It was only a studio and around 450 square feet.  Everything else was true, but those disappointments were enough to make us disappointed.  Bummer.  And it was hot…

The host of the apartment, though, has been super nice and helpful and understood why we were disappointed.  She is very nice and has bent over backward to make our stay pleasant, despite missed expectations.

We slept very well after a rough evening and everyone slept until 8am!  We ate breakfast and headed out for our first full day in NYC…today’s goal was to see Central Park!

First, we walked to the ferry after missing the bus.  The walk wasn’t so bad, but we knew we really didn’t want to make it again, especially at the end of the long day.  The ferry ride was gorgeous, across the harbor viewing the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

After arriving, we tackled the New York subway system…and survived!  We took one train, then another and arrived safely to Central Park, though a few blocks over.

Over the course of the long day, with lots of walking, we visited 7 different playgrounds.  The kids had a BLAST at each one and played with lots of different kids!

We did get some lunch from a truck – it was the best gyro of my life.  Oh my goodness, so good…

Next we took the subway back towards the boat, but got off at Times Square to walk through…at 5:30pm.  It was so busy, but so fun.  Amelia loved seeing Elmo and Levi loved seeing Woody…we also saw Predator on a cell phone.  It’s a crazy place and we loved it, just for a little while.

Times Square!

Finally, we got on the subway again and headed back to the ferry terminal, back across the harbor, caught the bus and arrived back at the apartment.  Whew.

Tomorrow’s goals are a few more sights…hopefully we’re not too tired after all that walking…

Day 34: The Rest of NH

July 7, 2013

So, blogging late at night is dangerous, but it’s really the only time I have to do it.  My post from yesterday left out our Friday night get together entirely!  Ahhh!!!  So, my apologies to our hosts and the guests that came!

We had a great time Friday night with one large family and a few others.  The large family was such a blessing because they have adopted several times over, from all over the world.  We just shared and chatted until we were all too tired to share anymore.

So, fast forward to today.  This morning we presented at Faith Baptist Church in Manchester, NH – well, Matthew presented, I kept two tired kids quiet in the pew.  We met some great folks after church during the fellowship time and were able to hang around long enough to meet the pastor of the church that meets there in the afternoon.  That church is African! We didn’t catch his home country, but just talking to him reminded me of home in DRC – the accent, the gait to the language, his fancy suit.  It’s a great connection!

After church we headed south about half an hour to a friends’ house – these are friends from our days in Alaska.  When they moved ALL THE WAY to New Hampshire, we thought we wouldn’t see them again, especially in their house.  We had such a great, relaxing afternoon with them.  Their son is just a year older than Levi and their daughter is a few months older than Amelia.  And, of course, we’re both pregnant with #3s…though she’s due by the end of the month and I have a ways to go.  Amelia and I even got naps while at their house – that’s how you know you’re with true friends.

Tonight is our last night in New England and tomorrow we head off on a brief adventure to NYC…
