Photo Post (Matthew’s iPhone)
January 7, 2013
Matthew here: I often have grand intentions of spending more time blogging, but the planets never seem to align. Today I synced my iPhone and pulled the photos, it was quite the timeline from pre-departure to present, and I thought y’all might be interested in a few highlights. The slideshow is a mix of smiling children (for the mommies and grandparents), work projects (for the guys out there), and other miscellany (take it or leave it)…
- Amelia chatting up Master Krulish (there were some definite sparks of interest)
- Sleeping Millie
- Fat happy baby, where did all the fat go?
- The kiddos right after arrival
- The old kitchen counters – with a few more tiles removed
- Tree vs. Wall – tree every time. Gorilla vs. Tiger?
- Leopold putting up the new wall at the MAF house
- “I miss the rains down in Africa…” Ha, stuck in your head?
- The bridge most of our friends use to get to church
- “Gobble the Wobble” What?
- MAF house pipe drama – also, note that this is 1/2 inch pipe and almost all of the house is supplied through that tiny, rusty orifice
- David’s awesome pipe replacement, with shnazzy green pipe
- Sweet new fuel pump and meter at Semendua – thanks David for the install assist!
- Nick’s old electrical setup – three phases, 210v at each line. Somehow, 14v to 380v on the other side of the fuses. Cut it and gut it!
- Close up of sweet sparking death. Wish I had a photo of the flamed-out wires in the bedroom…
- Nick’s new sweet electrical panel. Most of the components are salvaged, but everything is re-engineered and re-wired
- Cows on the side of the road near our house – New Year’s party or bride price?
- The 12″ deep sand in the Burton’s gutter (reason for flooding) – sorry for the lack of scale
- The new Lister-Petter genset (hopeful) going in at the MAF house for the residence as well as the VSAT
- The roof on half of Nick’s guest house – that is asbestos/cement roofing, and I think it is past its prime
- A full Caravan load-out – ten bikes, one 125cc moto, a massive copier, and a multifunction office machine. Not shown are the solar panels and a cargo pod full of batteries and other freight
- I knew I lost the fight with the mirror, but I did not realize the blood was running down my arm. When I got home I had a blood streak from elbow to wrist – and it was still oozing after 8 hours…
- Levi doing a preflight on the newest addition to the fleet
- My little dude driving a boat at 35mph on the CONGO RIVER
- Ritzy house barges next to the acclaimed Yacht Club de Kinshasa – yes, those are the new “direct flush” toilets
- Nick’s guest house ceiling. Roof supported on ceiling, supported on 50mm sq “chevron” over 20′ span
- Jack and temporary support
- Angle iron brackets punched in
- Straight ceiling… BOOYAH!
- Old batteries in Vanga – RIP
- Old battery rack
- New fuel pump battery in Vanga – a trifle boring
- Next to the river in Vanga
Laters!
